The Norwegian Institute of Bunad and Folk Costume is located at Valdres Folk Museum. The institute is incorporated into an agreement between the Ministry of Culture and the museum, which states that Valdres Folk Museum should have responsibility for the institute’s operation, administration and professional activities. According to section 3.1 of the agreement, the museum shall:
- work to promote, protect and continue the use and production of bunads and folk costumes in Norway as an expression of cultural identity and as a bearer of distinctive qualities

continue and further develop the work on advising on and stimulating interest in costume-making traditions as a basis for contemporary bunads

facilitate the acquisition, storage, dissemination, development and maintenance of the documentary collections
- have human resources responsibility for the institute’s employees
The director of the Norwegian Institute of Bunad and Folk Costume serves as secretary to the Bunad and Folk Costume Council, with responsibility for preparing agenda items, keeping minutes and administering board meetings.
