The Nordic Costume Seminar (Nordisk draktseminar) is arranged every three years, rotating among the five Nordic countries of Finland, Sweden, Iceland, Denmark and Norway. The seminar is a collaboration between institutions and associations with expertise in costumes.
A selection of craftspeople and researchers who work on different aspects of costumes are invited to each seminar. Each seminar has a theme, and presentations are given on new and relevant research projects and new literature. A report is written after each seminar.
The most recent seminars were held in Norway in 2015, in Denmark in 2018 and in Iceland in 2023. The seminar in Iceland was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The theme for the seminar held in 2015 was Folkedrakt i fortid og samtid - seremoni, form og bruk [Folk costumes past and present: Ceremony, design and use]. Reports from this seminar can be purchased from us on request.
In 2018 the theme was Strikk i nordiske folkedrakter [Knitwear in Nordic folk costumes] and in 2023 Dekorasjoner på folkedrakter [Embellishments on folk costumes]. The report from this seminar is available here:
