Ever since its establishment in 1947, the Norwegian Institute of Bunad and Folk Costume has conducted comprehensive studies of folk costume traditions in Norway, and has published several reports based on this work. The staff have also published academic and popular science articles. Today, the staff at the Norwegian Institute of Bunad and Folk Costume conduct research on bunads and folk costumes as historical phenomena and on the bunad in contemporary society.
A Nordic folk costume seminar is arranged every three years, and is followed up with the publication of a report containing articles written by the speakers.
In December 2008, the Norwegian Institute of Bunad and Folk Costume took the initiative to establish the National Network for Costumes and Textiles, the purpose of which is to create new forums for exchanging knowledge and research findings and to develop cooperation and optimal use of resources.
